In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the clutter that accumulates in our homes and lives. Whether it’s a pile of mail on the kitchen counter, clothes that haven’t seen the light of day in years, or a garage that barely has room for your car, clutter can create unnecessary stress and chaos. Decluttering doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. With a few simple and easy-to-apply decluttering hacks, you can start reclaiming your space and finding the peace and calm you deserve. Let’s take a look a some fun easy to implement decluttering hacks.
The 10 Minute Tidy
One of the most effective ways to keep clutter at bay is to dedicate just 10 minutes a day to tidying up. Set a timer and focus on one area, like your living room or kitchen counter. You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in a short amount of time. This habit not only helps maintain a clutter-free space but also makes cleaning less overwhelming.
Make a game of it and get your family involved. It is amazing what kids will do if you make it a race or have a reward at the end of a quick pickup. If you don’t have 10 minutes pick up 10 items from the middle of the floor. If you’re thinking kids don’t always need a reward for helping that might be true but it doesn’t have to be anything big. Time with them doing something they love is a great reward for both of you.
The One in One Out Rule
To prevent clutter from creeping back into your home, adopt the “one in, one out” rule. Every time you bring a new item into your home, commit to getting rid of an old one. It could mean donating a piece of clothing you no longer wear when you buy something new or recycling an old magazine when a new one arrives. This simple hack helps maintain balance and prevents accumulation.
It can work for clothing, shoes, kitchen gadgets, kids toys and more. We are all inundated with so much stuff, keeping it at bay will free up our homes and our lives. When our homes are filled with unnecessary stuff we carry that heaviness in our hearts and minds.

The Four Box Method
When you’re ready to tackle a cluttered area, use the 4-box method to stay organized. Label four boxes: “Keep,” “Donate,” “Trash,” and “Relocate.” As you go through your belongings, place each item into one of these boxes. This method not only makes the decluttering process more manageable but also ensures that you make thoughtful decisions about what to keep and what to let go of.
Decluttering is about making decisions. If you struggle making decisions decluttering may be harder for you but try not to over think it. If you love it keep it. If you haven’t worn it or used it recently and it’s not something you love donate it. Let it go to the world and let someone else enjoy the item. We all have things in our homes that we don’t use, if it isn’t good enough to donate, trash the item. If you need to relocate an item don’t let the box of items sit too long before you put them in their new place.
After your donate box is ready make time in your schedule to donate it. Keeping it in the closet or driving around with a box of stuff in your car doesn’t serve you. You will feel a rush of adrenalin when you drop off the box. It feels amazing and lighter.
The 12 -12 -12 Challenge
Turn decluttering into a fun challenge by using the 12-12-12 method. Find 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to return to their proper place. This quick and easy hack not only helps clear out clutter but also brings a sense of accomplishment as you see immediate results.
This is a fun way to make some visual progress in your decluttering efforts. It is also fun when we can make a game out of the task. Children would love doing the 12 – 12 – 12 challenge. You could do it by room or have family run through the house looking for 12 items they can donate. We have so much stuff taking up precious space in our homes. It is also a great way to teach our children about giving back to others.
Create a Drop Zone
Designate a specific area in your home as a “drop zone” for items like keys, mail, and bags. This helps prevent clutter from spreading throughout your home and makes it easier to find essential items when you need them. By containing the clutter to one area, you’ll keep the rest of your home looking tidy and organized.
If you have children create a zone for them to drop their backpacks, coats, boots and other items. It doesn’t have to be a beautifully designed space but and organized space so they know where to put all their belongings. Create a system that works for your family. Encourage them to clean out their backpacks as soon as they get home then return the backpack to the drop zone ready for the next day. Having a place for shoes, coats and boots will keep your home cleaner and more organized.
Practice the 'One Touch' Rule
The “one touch” rule is a simple but powerful decluttering hack. The idea is to handle items only once: when you pick something up, put it in its proper place right away instead of setting it down somewhere else. This practice reduces the chances of clutter piling up and encourages you to be more intentional with your belongings.
It is easier to keep a clutter free home clean because everything has a place. The one touch rule works really well when you’ve spent some time editing and decluttering your home. If you use something in the kitchen put it back before you put it down on the counter. When you take off your shoes put them away. It is way easier to keep a declutter house clean then trying to find a place for an item in an overfilled cupboard or drawer.
