Transforming a primary bathroom from builder grade to modern is one of the most rewarding home improvements you can undertake. Increasing the style and look in the space without major demolition. Whether you’re tired of the generic look or just want to inject some personality into your bathroom, there are several simple yet impactful updates you can make. Let’s explore how updating your mirrors, removing outdated medicine cabinets, enhancing lighting, adding an accent wall, and swapping out hardware can take your bathroom from basic to beautiful. Are you ready to take your primary bathroom from builder grade to modern?
Updating the Mirrors
Mirrors are a focal point in any bathroom, and upgrading them is an easy way to make a big impact. If your primary bathroom still has the standard-issue, builder-grade mirrors, consider replacing them with framed mirrors or even custom-cut mirrors that reflect your personal style. This small change can instantly modernize the space, making it feel more polished and intentional. Opt for mirrors with sleek, contemporary frames for a minimalistic look. By updating the mirrors in your primary bathroom, you’re setting the tone for a more sophisticated and modern aesthetic.
Removing builder grade mirrors is not hard. Remove the mounting clips from the top, pry it carefully from the wall. You can see the adhesive they used, then lifted it out of the metal tray in the bottom. Proceed with caution so you don’t drop the big mirror, it is more awkward than heavy. After the mirror was removed we cleaned the wall, painted then hung beautiful new mirrors. We had a large space to fill so instead of replacing a rectangle mirror with a rectangle mirror I found modern, elegant arched mirrors. One wasn’t going to fill the space adequately so I used two and love the look.
Here are a few of my favorite mirrors that will update your primary bathroom from builder grade to modern. The arched mirror comes in black and gold a beautiful modern update. If arched isn’t for you the rounded rectangle mirror will elevate any space. The options are endless, including an elegant round mirror.
Removing the Medicine Cabinet
Medicine cabinets may have been a practical staple in builder-grade bathrooms, but they often contribute to a dated look. Removing these bulky cabinets can create a more open and streamlined space. You can replace the medicine cabinets with open shelving, recessed niches to maintain storage without compromising style or fill it in for a modern clean look. This update not only enhances the modern vibe but also encourages a more organized and clutter-free bathroom. As you remove the medicine cabinets, consider how you can maximize wall space while maintaining the clean, modern lines that define today’s bathroom designs. You can see how we created a recessed niche in our guest bathroom here. For the primary bathroom we had enough additional storage, I wanted modern clean lines so we closed them. The only thing I miss about the medicine cabinet is the ability to see the back of my hair. Maybe the convenience of the storage being closer than the closet but overall I’m loving the clean modern look.

Enhancing the Lighting
Lighting plays a crucial role in transforming a bathroom from ordinary to extraordinary. Builder-grade bathrooms often come with basic, uninspired lighting fixtures that do little to highlight the space’s potential. To modernize your primary bathroom, consider installing layered lighting that includes ambient, task, and accent lighting. Sconces, and pendant lights are popular choices for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. A well-lit bathroom not only looks more luxurious but is functional. Updating the lighting can make your primary bathroom feel like a high-end spa retreat. Lighting comes in an array of cost but it doesn’t have to be super expensive. You can find beautiful luxurious reasonably priced lighting. It is also an easy update to your primary bathroom. Taking it from builder grade to modern and elegant.
Do you need help finding modern lighting? Here are a few of my favorites. I love this vanity light with a perfect amount of black, gold and glass. For an additional layer of elegance check out this chandelier. These sconces will elevate any primary bathroom.
Adding an Accent Wall
An accent wall is a powerful design tool that can completely change the look and feel of your primary bathroom. Consider using bold tiles, natural stone, or a striking paint color to create a feature wall behind the vanity or bathtub. It adds visual interest and gives the room a modern and cohesive look. If you’re looking for an easy inexpensive way to incorporate texture add a roman clay accent wall. By adding an accent wall, you’re bringing a touch of sophistication and modern flair to your bathroom.
This project made me nervous but it had an easy learning curve with luxurious results. Mix paint and drywall mud then add it to the wall with a trowel. It is a little messy and takes more time than painting but honestly went up faster than I expected. Adding the perfect amount of texture and charm to the primary bathroom. Check out this post to see step by step instructions so you can create this modern roman clay accent wall.
I used the same color paint as other accent walls in my home for a cohesive look. The first coat I applied looked way different then expected but after the second coat the color came through and looked how I envisioned.
My one tip for this wall would be to mix up enough roman clay for both coats. If you don’t it wont match. The product went farther than I expected but it does take more that if you’re painting.
Upgrading Hardware and Pulls
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to modernize a bathroom is by upgrading the hardware. Builder-grade bathrooms often come with basic, uninspiring pulls and knobs that can make the entire space feel generic. Swapping for modern, stylish options like polished brass can make a world of difference. This small update can tie the entire bathroom together, giving it a modern and high end finish. When it comes to pulls you get what you pay for. The inexpensive ones are light plus they look and feel cheap. Consider investing a little extra to get pulls that elevate you bathroom, taking it from builder grade boredom to modern and high end.
The beautiful solid brass cabinet pulls are the ones I invested in. The are so beautiful and were an easy way to update the space. For a modern look the solid brass half moon cabinet pulls would add all the luxury and elegancy you are looking for.
If you’re switching pulls the hole centers will dictate the size you buy. If you are adding pulls you can get any size you want, make sure they are substantial enough for the cupboards.
Updating your primary bathroom from builder grade to modern doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a few strategic changes—such as updating mirrors, removing medicine cabinets, enhancing lighting, adding an accent wall, and upgrading hardware—you can create a space that feels fresh, stylish, and uniquely yours. Whether you’re planning a full renovation or just looking to make a few impactful changes, these changes will help you achieve the modern bathroom of your dreams. Enjoy a bathroom that’s not only functional but also a true reflection of your personal style.
