How to Embrace Hygge and Create More Calm in Your Home and Life

Have you ever heard of the word Hygge? (It’s pronounced hoo-guh, by the way.) It might sound like something out of a cozy fairytale, but this Danish concept is one of the most beautiful tools we have for creating a warm, welcoming, and peaceful home and even a more contented life.

In my digital course, From Chaos to Calm: Cultivate Home and Life One Space and Step at a Time, we dive into Hygge as one of the foundational pieces for cultivating a home that feels like a soft exhale. And today, I want to share a bit of that magic with you.

What Is Hygge?

Hygge is a Danish word that doesn’t have a perfect English translation, but its meaning is all about coziness, contentment, connection, and well-being. It’s that soft sigh when you sink into your couch at the end of a long day. The flicker of candlelight during dinner. It’s the comfort of a warm blanket, a shared laugh with family, or a quiet moment with a good book and a cup of something warm.

In short, Hygge is about savoring the simple pleasures of life. It’s a feeling, a mindset, and a way of approaching the world.

And guess what? It’s not just for cold winter days or Instagram perfect spaces. You can embrace Hygge in your home and life year-round and no, it doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.

Why Hygge Matters (Especially Now)

Let’s be honest modern life is busy. We’re pulled in so many directions every day. Work, errands, kids, school, schedules, and the never ending pile of laundry (seriously, where does it all come from?). In the middle of it all, we crave peace. We long for connection. We want to feel more present.

That’s where Hygge comes in. It’s not about doing more it’s about being more present with what already is.

Hygge invites us to slow down and enjoy the beauty of now. Whether you’re folding laundry with music playing softly in the background or sipping your yerba mate while your little one plays at your feet, Hygge helps you turn everyday moments into something sacred and special.

Creating Hygge at Home

Your home doesn’t have to look like a magazine spread to be filled with Hygge. It’s about how it feels, not how it looks.

Here are a few simple ways to create Hygge in your home:

1. Layer in Cozy Textures

Think soft throw blankets, squishy pillows, fuzzy rugs, and your favorite loungewear. There’s something powerful about creating physical comfort that invites emotional comfort, too.

2. Use Soft, Warm Lighting

Harsh overhead lighting? Not Hygge. Try using lamps, fairy lights, or candles to create a soft glow that feels inviting. Bonus points if your candles smell like vanilla, cinnamon, or fresh-baked cookies.

3. Create Inviting Spaces

Set up a nook where you can read, journal, or sip tea. Make your family room a place where people want to gather. You don’t need new furniture—just intentionality.

4. Keep It Clean (ish)

Now, this is where From Chaos to Calm course really helps. When your home is organized and decluttered, it’s easier to relax, feel grateful, and be present. A tidy kitchen or an organized pantry can be shockingly satisfying. (Yes, even your spice cupboard can spark joy … mine sure does)

Hygge Isn’t Just for Winter

Many people think Hygge is a winter only thing, something you do when it’s dark at 4 p.m. and you’re buried in snow. But you can create Hygge in every season.

In the summer months, Hygge might look like:

  • Eating dinner outside on the patio

  • Evening walks with your family

  • Savoring a fresh peach from the farmer’s market

  • Reading a book in the hammock

  • Making lemonade from scratch with your kids

Hygge is about enjoying the moment, whatever the season.

Hygge in Everyday Life

More than just home décor, Hygge is a lifestyle mindset. It invites us to accept ourselves fully, to find joy in the little things, and to approach life with mindfulness and gratitude.

Here are some gentle reminders for bringing Hygge into your daily life:

– Be Present

Instead of rushing to check everything off your to-do list, pause to really be in the moment. Whether you’re driving your kids to school, or cooking dinner, notice the sensations. Feel the warmth, smell the spices, and let yourself slow down.

– Practice Gratitude

Hygge thrives in an atmosphere of gratitude. Be thankful for the food in your pantry, the roof over your head, the body that carries you through your day. Gratitude shifts your focus from lack to abundance.

– Connect with Yourself

It’s nearly impossible to connect with others if we haven’t connected with ourselves first. Give yourself grace. Talk kindly to yourself. Make time for things that fill you up whatever that looks like for you.

Why Hygge and Organization Go Hand-in-Hand

You might not think that organizing your pantry or tidying your closet has anything to do with Danish coziness but it totally does.

When your home is in order, it’s easier to find peace.

A cluttered environment can lead to a cluttered mind. But when you create systems, declutter your spaces, and simplify, you clear mental space for joy, connection, and presence. You create room for Hygge.

In my course From Chaos to Calm, I walk you through this process one space and one step at a time. It’s not about perfection it’s about progress. It’s about building a life that feels like home, inside and out.

Calm is Contagious

Here’s something I’ve learned .

If you’re frazzled and frustrated, your family can feel that. But if you show up with calm, even when things are chaotic, that calm starts to ripple out.

And no, I don’t always get it right. I raised four sons. There were years when life was loud and messy and wild. But through all of it, I discovered that when we take small steps toward order, peace, and presence, we can cultivate something truly beautiful.

You don’t have to wait for the “perfect” season to start. You can begin cultivating Hygge right now … yes, even with laundry piles and cereal crumbs underfoot.

You’re Already Doing Better Than You Think

Sometimes we think we have to change everything to feel better in our homes and lives. But often, the biggest shifts come from the smallest changes.

Lighting a candle.
Putting on music while you cook dinner.
Wearing your coziest socks.
Sitting down to eat dinner together even if it’s frozen pizza.

Hygge reminds us that joy is available right now. Peace is possible even in the middle of a busy life. Home is not a destination, it’s a feeling we create through intention and love.
