How to Create a Joyful Home One Space and Step at a Time

Creating a joyful, peaceful home sounds amazing in theory until you’re facing laundry mountain, stepping on LEGOs, and wondering how the dishwasher is already full again.

But here’s the deal: it’s possible to cultivate a home that brings you real joy. Not just Pinterest perfect joy, but deep, meaningful joy, the kind that hugs your soul and fills your heart.

In my course, From Chaos to Calm: Cultivate Home and Life One Space and Step at a Time, I walk you through the process of transforming your home (and life) with small, doable actions. But let’s have some fun right now and talk about how to create a home that feels joyful even if the wheels occasionally fall off.

Spoiler Alert … THEY WILL.

The Power of Cultivating Home

Let’s get something straight: your home doesn’t need to look perfect to function and be filled with peace and love. The truth, it wont and shouldn’t.

Creating a space where you and your family feel loved, safe, and seen is where the true power lies. The messes? Totally normal. The loud moments, the chaos, the mismatched socks? All part of the magic.

When you intentionally cultivate your home, you’re not just organizing or decluttering, you’re creating a shelter from the world. A place of comfort, love, and maybe even a little popcorn and movie night magic.

It’s About Progress, Not Perfection

Here’s a fact: The magic is in the middle.

Trying to aim for some kind of magazine perfect home where nothing is out of place and no one ever makes a mess equals frustration and disappointment.

Unless you live alone and have total control over your environment, you’re going to have to embrace a little bit of mess or a lot.

Instead of perfection, aim for “a little bit better.” Try a system. See how it feels. If it works, great, stick with it. If it doesn’t, switch it up! No shame, no stress.

Every attempt gives you knowledge about your home, your needs, and your family. You’ll figure it out.

Quick win tip: Start with just one drawer, one closet, or one corner. Small steps are the way to big results.

Families That Work Together, Grow Together

Let’s talk about working together as a family. Because yes, it’s usually faster to clean the kitchen by yourself. But that’s not the goal here.

The goal is to create connection.

When you invite your family into the process … tidying up, setting goals, celebrating wins, you’re doing something powerful. You’re teaching teamwork, building trust, and creating a sense of belonging that will shape your kids for life.

They might not love it now, but their future selves (and future roommates or spouses) will thank you.

Encouragement moment: Give your kids some ownership over their space. Let them help choose how to organize their closet or decorate their shelves. A little freedom goes a long way.

Belonging Starts at Home

Home is the first place your family learns about love, acceptance, and belonging.

It’s where your kids learn that they matter, their voice is heard, and their efforts are appreciated. Creating systems that allow everyone to contribute whether it’s setting the table, folding laundry, or editing their toy shelf helps them feel like they belong.

Not to mention, when people contribute to the space, they value it more.

Bonus tip: Set small shared goals—like, “When the family room is tidy, we’ll do a movie night with root beer floats!” It’s a win-win.

Start Where You Are, Use What You Have

You don’t need new furniture, a giant renovation budget, or all matching bins from The Container Store, they’re fun but not necessary to start. What help decluttering and editing your home. Check out this blog post to get started.

You need a mindset shift.

It starts with accepting where you are, then choosing one space to focus on. You don’t have to do it all. Just start with something.

One shelf. One room. One habit.

You don’t have to do it all.

This is a foundational truth I teach inside my course. If you’re nodding along, then girl, it’s time to join me inside From Chaos to Calm. You’ll love the step-by-step format that gives you progress without the pressure.

Let’s Talk About Small Steps

One of my favorite reminders? Small steps lead to big results.

If you think you have to overhaul your entire house, get everyone on board, and maintain the energy of a professional organizer to make real change, you’re setting yourself up for disappointment.

Here’s the truth bomb: You don’t need everyone to change for things to change.

Let that sink in for a minute.

When YOU begin shifting your energy, your habits, your systems … that creates a ripple effect. Your family will notice. They may not jump in (they’re human), but they’ll feel the difference. And some will follow your lead.

Actionable idea: Start a 10-minute tidy routine. Set a timer each night before bed and tidy for just 10 minutes. It adds up!

What About Kids' Rooms?

Here’s my honest truth: my kids’ rooms did not look like the rest of the house. And that’s okay.

I gave them some grace and freedom. But one thing that really helped? Editing.

Less stuff EQUALS less mess.

And while your kids might not thank you today for the tidy-room routines you’re encouraging, their future selves (and their roommates) will be silently cheering you on.

Real talk: Reasonable expectations are key. Your house isn’t a showroom it’s a space for growth, fun, and living. Mess is part of the deal.

Recognize and Celebrate the Wins

Whether you finally found a laundry system that doesn’t implode after two days, or your toddler learned how to put their shoes in the basket—celebrate it.

Recognizing even the smallest wins reinforces a positive environment that motivates your family.

Celebrate: The small wins add up, even if they are not as often or as appreciated as you’d like.

Home Is a Shelter and A Place for Learning

Your home should feel like a shelter from the outside world.

It should also be a place for learning a place where dreams are born, goals are made, and people grow into who they’re meant to be.

That doesn’t mean it’s always quiet or clean. But it does mean it’s intentional.

You are cultivating something beautiful. And the beauty is in the doing not the perfection.

And if you’re wondering how to begin or what to try next, my course was made for this moment.

Your Three Powerful Takeaways

Let’s recap the three biggest truths you need to remember as you cultivate your joyful home:

1. The Magic is in the Middle

Progress > perfection. Give yourself space to experiment, adjust, and evolve. You’ll find what works for your unique home and family.

2. Small Steps are the way to Big Results

Don’t underestimate the power of one drawer, one habit, one daily win. Big changes come from tiny steps taken consistently.

3. One Space and Step at a Time

Overwhelm is optional. You don’t have to do it all today. Focus on one area, one goal, one shift. Let it evolve as your life does.

Remember

Creating a joyful, beautiful, peaceful home isn’t about being perfect it’s about being present. It’s about showing up with love, trying again when things don’t go as you hope, and choosing to believe that your efforts matter.

Because they do.

Your home is worth it. You are worth it. And yes, it’s absolutely possible to find joy even in the middle of the mess.
