How to Cultivate a Life You Love—Mess and All

Do you want to know what isn’t fun?

Beating yourself up for the past.
Reliving mistakes.
Thinking you should’ve known better.

Here’s the truth: you can’t shame your way into a better future. You can’t change the past but you can change how you see it and how you use it to move forward

Love the Past, Even the Messy Parts

Every single one of us has moments we’d go back and redo if we could. But spoiler alert: we can’t.

So let’s stop wishing we could.

Instead, glance at the past the same way you use your rearview mirror, quickly and for perspective. But keep your focus on the windshield, where your life is heading. When we stare at the past too long, we miss what’s ahead.

Your past isn’t something to fight it’s something to learn from and even love. Yes, even the messy, awkward, not my finest moments.

Action Step: Write a letter of gratitude to your past self. The one who made the mistakes.

Progress Over Perfection

Cultivating a life you love isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about showing up for yourself over and over, even when it feels like nothing’s changing.

Ever start working out and feel worse before you feel stronger? That’s growth. It’s slow. It’s sore. But it’s worth it. Life is like that too.

You are a work in progress—and that’s a beautiful thing.

Stop letting your lower, primitive brain drive the ship. Stop spinning in drama, pity, and fear. Instead, started talking to your brain more than you listened to it. Stop those negative, shaming thoughts in their track. How! Talk to your brain and say, I love you, we’re not going there, that isn’t true ….

Those loving kind thoughts will stop the negative, shameful and spinning thoughts in their track.

Cultivate Confidence and Compassion

When you combine compassion with accountability, everything changes. You’ll surprise yourself with what you’re capable of when you honor your commitments to you.

Let’s say you tell yourself, “I’m going to declutter the closet on Saturday.” When Saturday comes, excuses will show up too. You’ll be tempted to skip it and you won’t feel like doing it.

But if you show up anyway, messy, tired, unmotivated you’ll build trust with yourself. And that’s the beginning of a truly cultivated life.

The 70% Rule (Progress with Grace)

You don’t need to be perfect to grow. Try showing up for yourself 70% of the time and offering grace the other 30%. That’s enough to build momentum and enough space to be human.

True confidence doesn’t come from getting it all right. It comes from embracing the whole truth:

“I’m amazing, and I’m also a mess.”

And guess what? So is everyone else.

Focus Forward

Ask yourself:
What will my future self thank me for?
Is it putting a system in place? Tackling one drawer? Saying no to something that drains you?

Life isn’t about living on autopilot. Look at yourself with intention, notice what you’re doing. Appreciate it. Live it. Choose it. Even if you pause or take breaks, you’re still moving.

Picture your home and life one year from now. Can you see it? Peaceful, organized, more joyful. Keep going. Future-you is cheering you on.

You’re Already Enough

You don’t need to become someone else to live better you just need to be more of you.

When I first started this journey, I thought I was beyond help. I didn’t believe change was possible for me. But I showed up anyway. I did the work. And a year later, I barely recognized myself in the best way.

And I still mess up. I still take breaks. But I’m never the same person I was yesterday. That’s the gift of growth.

So here’s your reminder:
You’re amazing. You’re messy. And you are deeply valuable, today, yesterday, and tomorrow.

Just keep showing up, offering grace to yourself at times but pushing yourself to change.
