Do you ever feel like your home is constantly in a state of chaos? Between managing daily tasks, keeping up with laundry, and making sure everything has a place, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The good news? Creating an organized home isn’t as hard as you think! The secret lies in simple, sustainable systems that make tidying up effortless and maintaining order second nature. If the word ‘systems’ sounds overwhelming trust me it’s not. You have systems already in place you might just think of it differently. Having simple, sustainable systems makes creating calm in home a breeze.
Why Systems Matter in Home Organization
Without systems, clutter accumulates, chores pile up, and stress levels rise. Systems are the foundation of a calm, clutter-free home because they eliminate decision fatigue, streamline daily tasks, and ensure everything has a designated space. When you create organization systems, you’re not just cleaning up—you’re designing a home that works for you instead of against you
Simple Systems for an Organized Home
Ready to turn your home into a more peaceful, functional space? Here are some easy-to-implement systems that will make a big impact. You don’t have to do it all at once, so don’t fall into overwhelm. One space and step at a time to amazing results.
1. Declutter First, Then Organize
Before setting up any system, decluttering is key. Go room by room, removing items that no longer serve a purpose. Once you have only what you need and love, it’s easier to create storage solutions that actually work. It is also easier to keep your home clean if it is decluttered and organized. A little time on the front end but saves you time and energy over and over again.
This doesn’t have to take a lot of time. If you’re working in your closet make quick judgements, does it fit, do you like the way it looks on you and does it make you look amazing then keep it. If you keep putting it back because you don’t love it donate it.
When organizing a junk drawer make quick decisions. If you have a drawer filled with pens that don’t work or you don’t like toss them quick. You may not need all the scissors or paperclips taking up space. Freeing up space not only makes the drawer function better but it also frees up space in your mind and body.
Less feels better.
2. The “One-Touch” Rule
A simple yet powerful system: Touch items only once. Instead of tossing your coat on a chair (only to move it later), hang it up immediately. Apply this to mail, laundry, and dishes—it keeps clutter from spiraling out of control. Get your family on board. When they’re done playing a game, clean it up before they get the next game out. When they’re getting into the bath have a hamper near by for clothes instead of them piling up on the floor.
This is a rule I implement even when I’m cooking. If I’m baking I pull out the flour, use it and return it to it’s home. Waiting until the end can feel overwhelming because you have counters covered in stuff, making it hard to work in your area.
When kids get home from school have a system for cleaning out their backpacks.
3. Daily Reset Routine
Spend 10–15 minutes at the end of each day tidying up key areas like the kitchen, living room, and entryway. A quick reset prevents messes from snowballing and makes mornings feel fresh and stress-free. It is so much easier to keep a house clean and takes less time than doing an overhaul at the end of the week.
It also feels less overwhelming.
4. Smart Storage Solutions
Use baskets, bins, and drawer dividers to create dedicated spaces for everything. Labeling storage containers makes it easy for everyone in the home to find and return items, reducing clutter buildup.
You don’t have to have a perfectly curated home to have a home that functions on a higher level. Start small work on one area at a time. If you’re working on your pantry take a few minutes and think about what you need. You don’t need to decanter all items for your pantry to function. If you’re going to put your cereal boxes by the containers you really aren’t helping yourself. Remember we are all individual and we all different needs.
Containers are a great option for containing like items, it will make grocery shopping and a breeze because you can easily see what you need. Check out my free pantry organization course. You can also get my FREE pdf with my favorite pantry storage solutions.

6. The 5-Minute Rule
If a task takes five minutes or less, do it immediately. This prevents small messes from turning into overwhelming projects later. If this is a new way of doing things it might seem overwhelming, but you’ll soon learn how staying ahead of things is easier than trying to dig yourself out. A five minute toy pickup is rewarding, you’ll be amazed by what you can do in just a few minutes.
If you have littles, involve them. Make it a game and get them helping keep things in order. You don’t have to keep on top of things by yourself. Teach your kids to do things, make it fun and rewarding.
Working together as a family can be fun, especially if there is a fun reward at the end. It could be a treat or time together.
