Step 1: External Facts
Everything starts with facts. We often think our stories are facts, so how do we know if something is a fact? They are neutral and provable. Things that could stand up in a court of law. They include other people’s words, the weather, or deadlines.
For example:
“It’s raining outside.”
“She said the words, ‘I don’t agree.’”
“The project deadline is Friday at 5pm.”
Facts themselves are not good or bad, they simply are. But what happens next is what determines your experience.
This is why causal life coaching starts with teaching you to separate the facts from the story. Once you do, you’ll see just how much power you actually have.
Step 2: Internal Story
When you encounter facts, your brain automatically creates a story about them based on what we can see, hear, touch, taste, or smell. This is your internal world — your thoughts and feelings.
Example:
Fact: It’s raining outside.
Story #1: “This is going to ruin my whole day.” → frustration.
Story #2: “This is perfect cozy weather for reading.” → contentment.
Same fact. Two completely different experiences.
Your thoughts create your feelings, and your feelings fuel everything you do next. When you start to notice your stories, you can decide whether they’re helping you or keeping you stuck.

Step 3: External Behaviors
Your thoughts and feelings don’t stay inside. They spill out into the world as behaviors, what others can see.
These behaviors include:
The words you choose.
The tone of your voice.
Your body language, posture, and eye contact.
For example, if your story is “I’m not good at presentations,” you might speak quietly, fidget, and avoid eye contact. On the other hand, if your story is “I’ve prepared well for this,” your tone and posture will communicate confidence.

Step 4: Internal Reality
Here’s where the cycle completes. Your behaviors feed back into your internal reality, confirming the story you started with.
Example:
Story: “I’m not good at presentations.”
Behavior: Nervous tone, lack of eye contact.
Internal reality: “See? I knew I was awkward.”
The loop continues, unless you break it.
The incredible news you can interrupt this cycle at any point. By shifting either your thoughts or your feelings, it changes, your behavior, your reality, and ultimately, your results.
You can also start by choosing the result you want and then work backwards: What behaviors would create that result? What thoughts and feelings (your story) would fuel those behaviors? This way, you design your outcome from the inside out.
This is what causal coaching is all about: addressing the root cause instead of trying to patch up the symptoms.
