How to Style a Tiered Tray in TEN Easy Steps

How to style a tiered tray in TEN easy steps.  I love decorating for the seasons but it can take a lot of time and cost a lot of money to get everything you want.  It also requires a lot of storage space to manage and organize all the decor.

Because I like to have a more minimalistic home I don’t like to be drowning in decor.  I know I’m not a true ‘minimalist’ but I don’t like having my closets and cupboards busting with stuff.  To solve all these problems I have found that decorating a tiered tray is a quick, easy and inexpensive way to add seasonal decor in your home season after season.

What Seasons Do You Decorate For?

There are so many options when it comes to seasonal decorating.  You can keep it simple and decorate for the four yearly seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall. Plus the bigger ones like Halloween or Christmas.

If you’re like me and love to add cute seasonal decor each month you can find something to celebrate and decorate without much trouble.  Like Valentines, Easter, 4th of July, Back to School and Thanksgiving.

Whatever you choose here are TEN quick, easy and no fail steps to decorating a tiered tray.

Step One:  Start With a Theme

What are you trying to accomplish with your tiered tray?  Is it a holiday or someone birthday?  Is it something you’re going to change often?  Are you wanting it to be timeless and last for several months?  Decide on your theme and work from there.

  • Once you have your theme decide on the color scheme you will be using
  • Even if it’s the holidays what color are you doing for Christmas or Halloween

Step Two:  Shop Your Home

What does that mean?  It makes sense to me but I had to explain it to my sister so let me explain it to you, just in case.  What it means is look around your home for pieces you already have to create a beautifully styled tiered tray.

  • You will be surprised by what you find.  Moving decor pieces around your home makes them seem new again.
  • Keep in mind the theme and color you already decided
  • Include an array of sizes and heights

Step Three:  Use a Variety of Textures

Using a variety of textures adds interest and dimension to your tiered tray.

  • Woods
  • Ceramics
  • Fabrics
  • Greenery
  • Candles

Step Four:  Go Shopping if You Need Additional Pieces

After you’ve collected everything in your home you may need to shop for additional pieces.  This is so much easier to do if you know what you already have.  Remember your theme and color scheme while you shop.

Step Five:  Place your Tray and Non Decor Pieces

I have a couple tiered trays that I change out.  One is larger and works better for bigger holiday seasons both in size and style.  My smaller one is more elegant, I love to use it for things like winter and spring decor.

What are non decor pieces and why do you need them?  These are random pieces I use to add height and dimension in my display.

  • Use items you already have on hand like wooden coasters
  • Or a small wooden box

Step Six:  Gather all the Decor you’ve Found or Purchased

Before you start decorating gather all your decor and group it according to height.

  • Make groupings of all the decor you have on hand by height
  • It’s not an exact science just group them in similar sizes

Step Seven:  Start Styling Your Tray

Here comes the fun part.  It’s time to start styling your tray.  Begin with the taller items.

  • If your tray is front facing then place the taller items at the back
  • If your tray will by seen by all sides place the taller items in the middle of the tray.

Step Eight:  For Variety Hang Items Over the Front

To add variety and depth hang items over the front of the tray.  This could be a variety of items.

  • A dish towel or napkin
  • Wood Bead Garland
  • Seasonal Garland

Step Nine:  Time to Add Smaller Decor Pieces

You have your larger items placed and a piece or two hanging over the front for variety it’s now time to add smaller decor pieces.

  • Start adding the smaller items in front of your larger pieces
  • Disperse colors so they are pleasing to the eye

Step Ten:  Step Back and Take a Look

As you add items take your time.  Don’t be afraid to step back and take a look.

  • Add more pieces if need
  • Take Items away if it’s not looking right
  • Move colors around to create balance.
