Add Modern Touches to Farmhouse Decor

Just a few years ago one of the biggest home trends was farmhouse.  A rustic, cozy and charming aesthetic like shiplap walls, farmhouse signs with catchy phrases.  It was and still is a beautiful style.  Like all trends things change, let me show you how to make some changes to your farmhouse style that doesn’t mean a complete home makeover.  Here is how to add modern touches to farmhouse decor.

Doing things that add subtle changes to a style but not having to completely change the style of your home.

What is the Farmhouse Style

Farmhouse style is an interior design trend that emphasizes a rustic, cozy, and charming aesthetic inspired by rural farmhouses. This style typically features natural materials such as wood, stone, and metal, as well as neutral colors like white, beige, and gray.

Some common features of farmhouse style include shiplap walls, exposed beams, vintage or antique decor, open shelving, and a mix of textures such as woven fabrics, burlap, and distressed finishes. Furniture tends to be simple, functional, and often made of natural materials like wood or metal.

Overall, the farmhouse style is meant to evoke a sense of warmth, comfort, and simplicity, while also celebrating the beauty of natural materials and the practicality of rural living.

Farmhouse Decor

Farmhouse decor incorporates vintage and antique with farmhouse signs, woods with whites.  All beautiful pieces that were a staple in homes, that love the farmhouse style.

It is impossible to keep up with all the trends but making small and simple changes when you’re ready to do something different is doable and doesn’t have to cost a fortune.

You can keep farmhouse elements but create a more modern home by changing a few pieces.  The past few months I’ve been incorporating modern into the farmhouse style in my home.

My back hallway was ready for a change.  There wasn’t a lot of investment or changes made besides paint color and decor but the difference was huge.

Painting the shiplap changed the look a lot.  Going from the standard farmhouse white to a modern elegant gray with an undertone of green.  Check out the beautiful color ‘Thunderous’ by Sherwin Williams

The wall art made a huge difference to the space.  The three pieces of wall art look so pretty with the wall color and in the space.  It’s modern and elegant.  Grab the framed canvas wall art here.  Adding the modern touches to the farmhouse decor was simple but made a big change to the space.

Wall Art for a Modern Look

The farmhouse signs throughout my home were pieces I loved for a couple years.  Now I’m ready to elevate the look.  I wanted a large modern textured canvas.  There are a lot available but they can be expensive.  Trying to find the right shape and size for the right price can be a challenge.  Because I like to create I decided to try making my own.  It was so fun and the results were exactly what I wanted.

Like the back hallway this adorable corner is now more modern than farmhouse.  Incorporating the Sherwin Williams color Thunderous on the shiplap took it from farmhouse to modern elegant.  Then replacing the farmhouse signs with the modern wall art.

This was a simple DIY that I am excited to create again soon.  Here is a large canvas that would be perfect for your modern home.  See how I made the modern canvas wall art here.

Another space that was updated by changing the paint color and changing out one piece of decor was the entry.

The shiplap tray ceiling was painted white to match the trim and the walls were an elegant gray but now needing a fresh look.  By painting the shiplap ceiling Sherwin Williams Thunderous and the walls Sherwin Williams Whitetail you get a modern update to the space.

Then changing out the rectangle square mirror to a modern elegant gold mirror the space instantly looks modern and on trend.

Farmhouse incorporates natural materials like wood, stone and metal.  The farmhouse style typically features a neutral color palette with shades of white, cream, beige and gray.  .

Farmhouse decor is comfortable and welcoming with a focus on creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.  Adding a modern touch to your farmhouse decor can easily be achieved by adding clean lines and contemporary touches.
